ILSi (ADULT/PAEDIATRIC ILS Instructor course)

ILSi is a specialist Instructor course that gives Candidates the skills to become an Instructor in Immediate Life Support (ILS) and Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS).

These skills can then be used to teach fellow healthcare professionals at ILS and PILS courses.

The ILS/pILS instructor course is not open to applications in the same way other courses are. Instead, future Instructors are found when they’re Candidates on an ILS or pILS course.

Course Directors and Faculty identify Candidates who they feel would make excellent Instructors and recommend them as having Instructor potential (IP).

Those Candidates then receive an email or letter inviting them to book a place on an ILSi course.

This means that unless you have been a candidate on an ILS or pILS course, been recommended as having instructor potential and received an email from RCUK you are not eligible to apply for this course.

ILSi/pILSi teaches the knowledge and skills required to:

• understand the nature of teaching and learning;
• understand the needs of individual learners;
• understand the awareness of the four domains of learning;
• undertake the various types of teaching sessions on the provider courses.

*ILSi/pILSi must be taken within one year of the date of the ILS/pILS provider course.

During the one-day course, Candidates will learn about what is needed to deliver an ILS and PILS course, learning and practicing key skills and facilitating teaching simulations.

The course consists of lectures, skill stations and simulation teaching sessions. 

This course will take place in our SMaRT academy,  Office 1, Kingston Court, Walsall Road, Cannock, Staffordshire, WS11 0HQ.  The course runs from 0830-1730hrs.

Our course centre is approved and certified by Resuscitation Council UK. Courses are run by dedicated and qualified Instructors, who have taken an RCUK Instructor course to guarantee that our courses are uniform and the content remains the same across course centres.

Candidates will receive a copy of the Pocket Guide to Teaching for Clinical Instructors, as well as teaching materials and assessment forms at least four weeks prior to the course, which they must read in preparation for the course. They should use the materials to prepare for their allocated teaching session that will take place during the course.

Continuous assessment occurs throughout the ILSi/pILSi course. Upon successful completion of the course, Candidates will receive a Resuscitation Council UK ILS or pILS Instructor certificate. 

Certified Instructors will also receive complementary Associate Membership of Resuscitation Council UK, which provides a variety of benefits.

Newly qualified (IC) Instructors will be supported and assessed on the first two courses they teach, to consolidate what has been learnt on the ILSi course.

This course is recognised as continuing professional development (CPD) by the Medical, Dental and Nursing Royal Colleges and Health Care Professional Council.
